Denizli is a city in Turkey's inland Aegean region and the main gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pamukkale and ancient Hierapolis. A modern industrial and textile center, long known for its towels and home textiles, it serves travelers mainly as a base and transport hub, with an airport, rail links and a large intercity bus terminal. The sights lie in the surrounding countryside. Pamukkale's white travertine terraces, formed by mineral-rich thermal water spilling down the hillside, sit directly below Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city with a large theater, a colonnaded street and one of the most extensive ancient cemeteries in Anatolia. Closer to the city stand the ruins of Laodicea, a wealthy Roman trading town in the Lycus valley, under long-running excavation. Most visitors travel out from Denizli and spend half a day or more at Pamukkale and Hierapolis. Early morning and late afternoon are the quietest hours on the terraces, and the low sun suits the white rock and pools; summers in the valley are hot and dry, while spring and autumn are milder.
