Maşukiye is a village in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli province, in Turkey's Marmara region, spread along a wooded valley on the northern slopes of the Samanlı Mountains just south of Lake Sapanca. Streams running down from Kartepe pass through the settlement, and the road up the valley is lined almost continuously with restaurants built beside and over the water. Trout is the local speciality, much of it raised in pools fed by the same streams and served with gözleme, village breakfast and tea at tables shaded by plane trees. Beyond eating, the appeal is the setting: short walks to small waterfalls and cascades, cool air in summer, and local operators offering quad-bike and off-road trips, horse riding and similar activities on the forest tracks above. Maşukiye is usually visited as a stop of a few hours rather than a destination in itself, most often combined with Sapanca and the drive up to Kartepe, whose ski slopes operate above the village in winter. Weekends bring heavy domestic crowds from Istanbul and Kocaeli, while weekdays are noticeably quieter. Late spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, when the surrounding forest turns and the streams are still full.
